APEX is a special education program designed for students in Shelby County who meet the Tennessee criteria for identification as intellectually gifted. Emphasis for the program is placed on opportunities to learn through differentiated curriculum in which process skills are taught and used to explore content and create quality products. Curriculum content is less important and more flexible than in the regular education program. Higher order thinking skills are developed and applied through:
Critical and creative thinking opportunities to problem solve
Researching to expand knowledge
Communicating with oral and written presentations and products
Promoting leadership and group dynamics (collaboration)
Evaluating to plan for growth and improvement
Technology (word-processing, research, database,
spreadsheet, and presentations)
