Last week of school!
No Tests this Week!!
But We will still Work and Learn!!!
Congratulations to our six representatives for the fourth grade Pentathlon: Austin, Robbie, Connor, Megan, Katie Beth, Raleigh.
In addition, Megan placed 1st for the girls and Katie Beth placed 2nd.
Way to go, Ryans Lions!!!
WOW - 2nd place for Field Day - I am very impressed with the energy, determination, and good sportsmanship portrayed by this class. They had a great time and so did I:) I am very proud of each and every one of these students!
Parents, a special thank you to all of you who took the time to support your child. They were so excited to see so many parents rooting for them. Also thanks to the parents who brought water and snacks and to the parents who helped on the line. You are very much appreciated. Another thanks goes to Abbies mom who made the personalized hair ribbons for the girls, as well as the class banner. They were awesome. Mary Carter and Griffen also did an outstanding job with each of their class banners. Thanks again to everyone who showed their support for Ryans Pride of Lions:)
Thank you so much to two volunteers:
Patricia Hayes (Chandlers mom) ~ Room Mom
Donna Collins (Gages mom) ~ AR Mom

SPELLING
(Spelling tests will generally be on Friday.)
Spell Words with the sufixes of -ful, -ly, and -ion:
careful, tasteful, lonely, powerful, suggestion, peaceful, recently, extremely, certainly, wisely, harmful, monthly, yearly, successful, playful, thoughtful, actually, pollution, correction, eagerly, separation, description, immediately, suspenseful, completely
In addition, we will have two states and capitals to spell each week: none this week
Two bonus words - of my choice from any content
area - will be given. Each of these two will be worth four points. No points will be taken away if they are missed.
I will give a pretest on Monday. The students will bring home a worksheet of correctly spelled words with their pretest.
**If your child is having difficulty spelling specific words, here are some helpful hints.
1) Ask yourself: Which part of the word gives me a problem?
2) Underline the problem part.
3) Picture the word in your head while focusing on the problem part.
Another hint: Make up rhymes with your child to help with memorizing. Ex. Many students misspell chief (cheif). Remember: The chief says hi.
Have a piece of pie.
ENGLISH
Review all types of sentences.
Continue to work on writing a complete sentence correctly using capitalization and punctuation rules.
Continue to work on nouns, their plurals, singular/plural possessive nouns, and pronouns. Continue to work on action/linking verbs, main/helping verbs, and subject/verb agreement, and irregular verb.
This Week: Using Quotation Marks

READING
(May 9 - Last day to take AR tests)
The students should be reading about 20 minutes at home daily. They are also getting extra time in the classroom to read. There are many AR books in our classroom library, as well as the school library and the Germantown Library. Students are welcome to take any of my AR books home as long as they return them. At the Germantown Library you do need to check the Dogwood AR list because each school has their own list and they may not be the same.
Mrs. Collins has been busy adding ice cream to the paper cones noting the students advancement to their goals. Twenty students have achieved 100%!!!!! AR ice cream treat is on Thursday.
Keep up the good work, students:)
(Reading Tests will generally be on Thursday.
Skills will continue to be taught on Friday.
A sheet entitled Family Times will be sent
home on Monday.)
Weekly Story: To Fly: The Story of the Wright Brothers
Vocabulary Words: hangars, glider, drag, flex, cradle, rudder, stalled
Skill: Generalize
Strategy: Ask Questions
This year we will also be working a great deal on reading with fluency ~ emotion with attention to punctuation. I believe this class has the best oral readers in fourth grade and probably even the middle school:) It is a joy to listen to them read.

Random Notes for
Students & Parents
1) Parents, I really appreciate you looking over and discussing the graded papers with your child. I tell the students they continue to learn even as they correct mistakes. Also, I do make mistakes - I am human. Please let me know if you find an error in grading.
2) Please consider safety when choosing your childs footwear for school. Open back shoes and flip flops can be dangerous for children when running on the playground during recess. Tennis shoes are always the safest.
3) Our air conditioner/heat cuts on and off. Please dress your child appropriately. Layered clothing is easy for students to take on and off as needed. Lightweight jackets/sweaters may be kept on the hook in the classroom.
